Buy + sell short Winners Keep Winning · Stock prices
Selling short: it profits when the stock falls — shares are borrowed to sell and bought back later. It needs a brokerage account approved for short selling (a margin account), and you can lose more than the money you put in.
This looks for stocks that may keep rising. Each month it buys the stocks that have gone up the most lately and sells short the ones that have done the worst. It spreads the positions evenly so no single industry or trend takes over (sector-neutral). The idea is that recent winners often keep winning for a while.

These tests hold the basket for one month, then re-pick it. The holding period is the time between those monthly updates.
The stocks the rule ranks best at the start of the month — and, when it also sells short, the ones it ranks worst.
Every position, whatever it does — no stop, no target.
Sell what dropped out of the ranking, keep what stayed, add what came in.
Every number on this page uses this monthly re-pick.
Needs a fresh test — built with an older method
It needs rebuilding so its basket picks only from what was known at the time, counts trading costs and keeps every result.

This rule buys some stocks and sells others short at the same time, so nothing is taken off for similar stocks: the figure is the basket’s own return, its buys and short sales together.
